Taiwan textile ingenuity on show at World Cup
The ingenuity of Taiwan’s textile industry is taking center stage at the World Cup in Brazil, with several nations sporting kits made from yarn featuring recycled polyethylene terephthalate, or PET.
In a June 25 article, French daily Le Figaro said Taiwan has already won its own World Cup of sorts on the back of efforts to place recycling at the heart of the local textile industry’s development strategy over the past two decades.
The article identified Eclat Textile Co. Ltd., Ecomax Textile Co. Ltd., Singtex Industrial Co. Ltd. and Super Textile Corp. as the main forces behind the innovation drive.
According to the report, over 13 PET million bottles were used to make high-performance jerseys for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. FIFA estimates that profits generated by the 2014 version will be over US$40 billion, with the garment industry the main beneficiary, a real jackpot for Taiwan companies.
According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Taiwan accounts for nearly 70 percent of the global market, which is projected to grow to US$60 billion in 2015.
It takes an average of eight bottles to make a sports jersey, the MOEA said. In addition to being lighter and more absorbent than cotton, the innovative fabric consumes less energy to produce. Savings average 30 percent compared with traditional materials.
Le Figaro also highlighted the efforts of Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation for collecting and recycling 12,000 tons of PET bottles per year and producing more than half a million blankets out of this material for humanitarian missions.
With both the public and private sectors keen on bringing Taiwan’s recycling efforts to a higher level, in the field of green innovation, Taiwan “leads the game,” the article said. (SFC-JSM)
